5 accommodations at Lourdes for hearing-impaired students - Hunter Yackee

1. Asissitive Listening Devices (ALDS): Assistive Learning Devices (ALDS) are devices that enhance and guide sound to a student's ears. These devices are especially useful in noisy circumstances or when the learner is seated far away from the speaker. ALDs can take the shape of headphones or earbuds that connect to the teacher's or lecturer's microphone. This allows the student to clearly hear the speaker even when there is a lot of background noise.

2. Captioning: Captioning is the technique of showing written text that correlates to what is being spoken on a screen or device. Captions can be especially useful for hard-of-hearing students who have difficulties reading lips or understandings certain dialects or speaking styles. A stenographer or speech recognition software can give captions in real-time. This accommodation also benefits our students who are not fluent in the language being used.

3. Sign language interpreter: Sign language can be useful accommodation for students who use sign language as their major way of communication. These individuals have been trained to translate spoken language into sign language and vice versa. Sign language interprets are especially useful in large lecture halls or during group discussions.

4. Visual aids: Students with hearing difficulties can benefit from visual aids such as diagrams, charts, and graphs. These aids provide a visual picture of the material being presented, which can help hard-of-hearing students grasp and retain it better. Visual aids can also be used by teachers to enhance verbal instructions and lectures.

5. Seating arrangements: Seating arrangements for hard-of-hearing students are considered. We assign these students to the front of the classroom or in close proximity to the teacher. We also give the student a seat that allows them to see both the teacher and any visual aids that are being used. Instructors also collaborate with these students to establish the optimal seating arrangement for their specific needs.
